A home on the tree

Type: Apartment

Jaffa, Israel

60 sqm

Status: Completed

2015

In the Greek market district of Jaffa - an urban area built with dense and mixed uses (residential, commercial, employment, educational and public buildings) an apartment for a young couple.

The apartment is on the last floor of a residential block with an inner courtyard, where a large and impressive ficus tree has developed over the years. At the beginning of the design process, the potential inherent in the proximity between planning in a dense urban space and the presence of the tree throughout the building's front - was identified as the main planning generator in the planning and design of the space. In keeping with the idea, the apartment was completely redesigned - the main living space (which includes the living room, kitchen, dining area, and balcony) was designed in close proximity to the important 'resource' while maintaining continuity and openness between the rooms.

As a reflection of the idea of ’the home on the tree’, the use of organic materials in the "natural" and matching colors was chosen - painted concrete tiles, walnut veneer wood, and natural aluminum.
